ART 003: Two-Dimensional Design

A collection of graphic design projects from my first-year ART 003: Two-Dimensional Design course.

Line Project

For this project, we had to develop two designs, one of which used primarily natural, curving lines, and one of which used primarily straight lines.

Shape Project

Our assignment for this project was to create a four-color pallate, paint four blank pieces of paper with those colors, and then construct four effective 4" x 4" designs, each using a different background color, by cutting shapes out of the original pieces of paper and collaging them together. This is one of my design pieces I'm personally most proud of, especially the first two. I personally think these four pieces work best together rather than separately.

Final Project: Playing Card Design

For our final project, "design a playing card" was somewhat of a loose goal. The main focus of the project was a style imitation of a professional artist or designer. Mine was Evan Hecox, who is perhaps best known as the "main art man" for Chocolate Skateboards. I found myself drawn to his mixed-media renderings of urban scenes, and attempted to replicate one such scene in this piece.

Playing card final project

Hecox often uses Chinese script in his pieces, and has made many using Chinese-language newspapers as a canvas. I found the newspaper used in this piece crumpled up and blowing around SteelStacks in Bethlehem, PA. It was in such bad shape that I actually had to cut out all the unusable material, divide the usable materials into rectangles, soak the entire thing in water and let it dry so it would flatten out, and then individually glue each remaining portion together to form a new, smaller rectangle. The rest of the drawing on top of this base uses acrylic paint and Sharpie marker.

It's a challenge to decipher if you don't read any Chinese, but this card, as indicated by the crown on the chair and the sign hanging above the door, is actually the king of hearts.
