About
Matthew McClain is a Los Angeles-based creative technologist. He is the author of Arduino for Artists, a how-to book for creatives with no prior technical experience who want to use the Arduino microcontroller platform to create interactive works of art using electronics. He holds a B.S. in I.D.E.A.S. (Integrated Degree in Engineering, Arts and Science) from Lehigh University with concentrations in electrical engineering and product design, as well as a minor in creative writing. He obtained his E.I.T. (Engineer in Training) certification in 2023.
Matthew served as Lead Creative Technologist at Hatch Escapes in Los Angeles until June 2024, where he helped to build The Ladder, a high-tech 2,000 square foot escape room/interactive theatrical experience containing well over a dozen playable games, a branching narrative, and nine different endings.
Matthew's passion lies at the intersection of design, technology, art, and engineering. He has a broad base of experience in creative technology, including electronics, Arduino/Rasbperry Pi, programming (Java, C/C++, and Python), CAD, networking and IoT, TouchDesigner, Unity game development, the Adobe Creative suite, and hands-on fabrication such as soldering and woodworking.
Matthew is currently available for hire as an independent creative technology consultant and contractor for escape rooms, film/tv, web content, and immersive theatre.
In his free time, he enjoys playing music, reading, writing fiction and poetry, playing video games, designing board games, listening to indie rock music, and working on DIY projects.
